Where I went to school every history teacher proudly announced that he was going to make us learn why things happened — the political, technical, and economic causes —
and not force us to memorize the dates of this King or that War. I think we'd have been better off memorizing the dates, than all those phony causes. We learned how governments progressed towards democracy, weapons grew to A-Bombs, exploited workers became comfortable consumers — the history of politics, of war, of economics, but no human history, nothing about the changes in the inner man or even the development of the mind and heart.
